I joked on Facebook a couple weeks ago that I knew it was Lollapalooza time because there was a trail of glitter from my daughter’s room to the front door. Teen-age girls (at least mine and her friends) spend time putting glitter on themselves because…well, I’m not sure why. Just like I don’t know why I got a perm in high school either.
Because we live fairly close to Grant Park, we had a few of my daughter’s friends come by every day to glitter up, which was fine except that meant there was glitter everywhere in our home. They did their best to contain it, but little pieces seemed to get into the tiniest of places. More than once, I noticed that I the glitter made its way to my body so my ankle/hand/elbow sparkled just a little bit.
We’ve hopefully all had moments like Moses did when he came down from the mountain and his experience with God made it seem like he was literally shining. A powerful prayer experience, perhaps. Or a walk in the woods. Friends may notice a change about us and we so hope that the feeling/experience would last. But then life happens and the shine wears off.
Others may be a bit nervous about their faith and don’t want others to know about it (which isn’t too surprising considering some of the behaviors and statements of some Christians these days). So they do their best to scrub the shine off so they’ll fit in.
Whether your shine wears off or is scrubbed off, I hope that you notice that God finds a way to make sure that even a tiny piece of “Holy Spirit glitter” will find a way into our lives, even if we don’t notice it. Both to remind of you that God’s presence is everlasting and also to sparkle in some way so that someone else may experience that presence, too. Let your glitter sparkle, friends. The world needs to see it.
