Why are we thinking about moving out of Spertus?
Spertus was our first location for UVC and it has served us well, especially when we first started out as one site. It’s in the heart of the city and conveniently located when we used to draw from all over Chicagoland. As we have added more sites, however, our attendance and “draw” have decreased (though UVC’s total attendance has increased). The theater in Spertus is now probably too big for us for the foreseeable future. In addition, our weekly rent is significantly higher than our other three sites.
Will we move out of the South Loop?
We have tried to find alternative locations in the South Loop in recent years, but it’s tough to find a space that offers a worship space plus two additional rooms for children’s ministries plus some storage in this part of the city. We’ve reached out to at least 20 entities (including all the colleges) in the past without much interest from them. Because of this, we’re expanding our search to include surrounding neighborhoods, including Streeterville, River North, West Loop, Pilsen, University Village and Chinatown. Access to CTA stops is key and reasonably priced parking is also a consideration (though, of course, in Chicago, reasonably priced parking is a bit of an oxymoron.) As a South Loop resident myself, I’d love to stay in this part of the city, but I’m open to seeing where the Spirit might lead.
How long will we be at Spertus?
Our lease is through the end of April. We haven’t totally ruled out renewing with Spertus, but, if we stayed, we may also look at a different part of the building.
What kind of space are we looking for?
A worship space that seats 120-150 people, at least two rooms for children’s ministries, some storage, and the ability to provide our own hospitality (food and beverage). And, as noted earlier, CTA access and parking are also big considerations. More than these practical considerations, though, we want a space that allows us some intimacy while retaining joy and energy and the ability to praise God and connect with one another. While the theater in Spertus is a beautiful space, I fear that sometimes it lacks the intimacy that is crucial for growth.
Have we thought about merging sites?
This is a good question. It’s occasionally been discussed, but part of our core commitment is to serve and be present in the many and varied neighborhoods of Chicago. We’d never say never, but it’s not our plan right now.
How can I help in this process?
I’m glad you asked! There are numerous places we’d like to contact and it would be a huge help to have some folks volunteer to make inquiries. Even if you only have time to reach out to one or two, it would make things much easier. Contact me (chris@urbanvillagechurch.org) if you’re interested.
I have a question that’s not listed here.
I’m not surprised! Again, don’t hesitate to reach out to me via the above email address with any question. Or pull me aside on a Sunday. Or send a message via Facebook or Twitter. This process may seem a bit unnerving, but know that I am fully committed to you and this site. I must confess being nervous myself, but I trust that God will lead us to the next phase of our growth as a church.
